A 1932 poem to Cab Calloway!

Poem to Cab Calloway

He pinches the reed and rolls his eyes

Kicks his toes and hi-de-hi’s.

He’s a red-hot man!

Wriggle his frame, shakes his feet

That boy’s got rhythm that can’t be beat

A red hot man!

It’s Minnie The Moocher’s Wedding day!

All the boys want to get good and gay,

They’re red-hot men!

A little black and a shed of blue

A couple of sharps, a flat or two;

Yeah, he’s a red-hot man!

Snaps that baton like a man insane;

I tell you guys, ‘tis all very plain,

That boy’s a red-hot man!

Here that trumpet C sharp share,

Lawdy man, them notes’d break a harp…

But he’s a red-hot man!

Hi-de-hi and ho-de-ho

Hear that weird, plaintive sound.

I’ll tell you seein’s you don’t know.

It’s maestro Cab kickin’ the gong around.

He’s a torrid man!
